Only one in six Germans say they would be willing to take up arms without hesitation to defend their country if Germany were involved in an armed conflict, according to a poll published on Sunday.
In the survey conducted by the German Forsa Institute for the RND media group, 16% of the sample said they would "definitely" go to war, while another 22% said they would "probably" do so.
But a clear majority, 59% of respondents, answered “probably” or “definitely” no. Among the women in the sample, the hesitation rises to 72%.
At the same time, more than a quarter of the sample (27%) consider it possible to very likely that Germany will be attacked militarily within the next five years.
59% of respondents also believe that there is a possibility that Germany will have to defend another NATO member state in the next five years.
The poll was conducted on a sample of 1,000 German citizens from July 28 to 29 and has a statistical margin of error of ±3%. (A2 Televizion)
