The American official warns Serbia: Causing unrest in Kosovo means confrontation

Causing unrest in the north of Kosovo means confrontation with NATO. This is the serious warning issued by the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O'Brien, mainly for Serbia but also for Kosovo.

The official, speaking to the media, stressed the importance of both sides understanding this well. Radio Free Europe reports that O'Brien has said that northern Kosovo must be calm and secure in order for Pristina and Belgrade to make political progress on their way to the European Union.

This statement of his comes at a time when NATO is considering the possibility of increasing KFOR troops in Kosovo, even increasing the number of permanent members.

Maintaining stability in the Western Balkans in the face of the threat of Russia's malignant influence will be one of the main topics of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

We will also address the situation in the Western Balkans. We have seen serious violence in the north of Kosovo; divisive and divisive rhetoric in Bosnia-Herzegovina; and malicious efforts to sow instability, including by Russia. Together with the High Representative of the EU, we will discuss ways to increase stability in the region," Stoltenberg declared.

He further underlined the need for Belgrade and Pristina to re-engage in the dialogue facilitated by the EU, underlining that "stability depends on all parties choosing dialogue and diplomacy instead of conflict and chaos".

The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, will also be present at the same meeting. According to O'Brien, the US top diplomat will discuss with NATO allies to address the growing tensions in the Western Balkans.

Earlier, the US Department of State announced that "Secretary Blinken will underline the alliance's commitment to Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression, confirm the United States' support for democracy and regional stability in the Western Balkans, and discuss priorities for the Washington summit in July 2024".

After the end of this NATO meeting, Blinken will travel to North Macedonia to participate in the OSCE summit, in which the foreign minister of Russia, Sergey Lavrov, is expected to be present. (A2 Televizion)
