The Democratic Party of Kosovo has expressed its unwavering stance against the candidacy of Albulena Haxhiu for Speaker of the Kosovo Assembly, proposed by the Vetëvendosje Movement. PDK MP Blerta Deliu-Kodra has stressed that Kosovo should not be blocked because of "one person's ego" and that the country's interest should be above the interests of individuals.
"We will be in session tomorrow, our positions are public, we will act in the same way, we will not support Haxhiu's candidacy. And we will demand that such a thing be done in cooperation and agreement with the political parties in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo to get out of this impasse, which has a name. It is an impasse created by LVV, the LVV coalition, Alternativa and Lista Guxo. We have offered our willingness to try to sit down and offer solutions on how to get out of this situation, unfortunately there is a lack of political will from Albin Kurti and his coalition to get Kosovo out of the situation we find ourselves in today", said MP Deliu-Kodra.
The PDK MP described the proposal of the chair of the constitutive session, Avni Dehari, that the vote for the president be held by secret ballot as a deviation from the procedures and warned that such an action could have dangerous consequences for Kosovo's democracy.
"It is not possible for a political entity to arbitrarily try to impose a dictate, firstly to impose a candidate who does not have the trust of the deputies in the Assembly of Kosovo, secondly to violate the procedures, a process that has been underway for some time, which is the voting process to elect the Speaker of the Assembly, to try to influence the internal procedures of the Assembly and change the form of voting. This does not happen in any democratic state, it has never happened, and it is a dangerous precedent for the way these people see the state."
Meanwhile, Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) MP Armend Zemaj accused the Vetëvëvendosje Movement of using abusive strategies to block the creation of new institutions.
"This is not only an abuse of the individual, because ultimately it is his acceptance of political and personal behavior. But, this is an abuse of the right of age where the assembly's rules of procedure stipulate that the oldest deputy, supported by the youngest deputy, must lead the constitutive session until the election of the speaker and vice-speakers."
The Vetëvendosje Movement will attempt for the tenth time on Saturday to win the votes it needs to elect a new speaker of the legislature in the February 9 elections. Nine attempts so far have ended unsuccessfully. (A2 Televizion)
