Among the many eye diseases, Glaucoma is known as the "silent" disease of vision, as the damage is not evident in the initial stages because the symptoms are not very noticeable. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve and slowly takes precedence in damaging the eye, making the loss of vision irreversible.
Anyone with a family history of glaucoma should have periodic visits to the ophthalmologist. This disease is genetic, increasing the risk of its occurrence even at an early age. Also, the use of corticosteroids can be among the causes of glaucoma, so you should be careful. Prof. Assoc. Astrit Beci, Head of the Ophthalmology Clinic at the Shkodra Regional Hospital, invited to the studio of the show Diagnozë by Freskida Miloti, listed some of the causes of glaucoma.
"When you have a parent who suffers from glaucoma or a grandparent who has suffered from glaucoma, or a family connection, say cousins and others, it is good that these examinations are as frequent and frequent as possible so that they are detected at the right time. Special vigilance is needed. You said one of the causes, what are the other causes? The cause can also be a trauma that can be complicated by increased intraocular pressure. Age is a risk factor for glaucoma. If before it was said that age over 60 was a risk, now it is increasingly being said that age over 40. Both the use of corticosteroids, as well as complications arising from diabetes, can cause complications." - said the doctor.
Glaucoma in its initial stage can be treated with eye drops or moderate treatments as advised by ophthalmologists. And if the stages of the disease have advanced, it is necessary to perform surgery, as the most effective form of preventing eye damage. Surgery has even advanced, now using microsurgical interventions and the latest innovations.
"The basic treatment is medication. Medications are mainly used in drops. If necessary, we take other oral medications, or if necessary, we combine medications with surgical treatment. Surgical treatment is often necessary when the preparations fail to keep the ocular pressure where it should be. We not only have long-established surgical treatments such as trabeculectomy, but now we also use very fine surgical methods through microsurgery and microsurgery implants, which are much more successful and easier for the patient to cope with as an intervention, with much fewer complications." - said Assoc. Prof. Astrit Beci
Glaucoma is known as a silent eye disease, and the symptoms are difficult to distinguish, yet there are some warning signs that indicate that glaucoma has begun to appear. Partial or temporary loss of vision is one of the alarming signs, while headaches are also a warning to have your eyes checked.
"Patients often present when they have central vision impairment and then we will try our best to maintain the situation in which they come. The sign often seen in patients is decreased vision or blurred vision, sometimes with a slight headache, and often the headache itself becomes a reason to visit a neurologist who often addresses them to do an eye exam. At the moment they do an eye exam as a request for help from a neurologist for a headache, we discover that the cause of this headache may be a change in the optic nerve, an increase in intraocular pressure, which gives a pain of a mainly trigeminal nature on one side of the head, according to the most damaged eye." - added the ophthalmologist.
