This year, unlike other years, there has been a decline in the number of birds in the waters of the Prespa National Park and Lake Ohrid. Specialists from the Administration of Protected Areas say that the cause is global warming and the withdrawal of water from Lake Prespa.
There are fewer birds in the waters of Prespa National Park and Lake Ohrid this year. Specialists from the Administration of Protected Areas indicate that the cause of the decline in numbers is global warming and the drying up of Lake Prespa.
"From field monitoring, it results that in January 2025, there is a lower number of waterfowl, while the species has increased. It is a result of global warming, it also affects the withdrawal of the lake level and the reeds have remained on dry land," said specialist Vasil Male.
Although the number is lower, specialists have noticed an increase in the type of birds. Three species of aquatic shellfish have been added to Lake Ohrid this year.
"A bird census was conducted in Lake Ohrid, the number is lower due to climate change, but we have an increase in the number of species. Sandpipers and mudskippers. It was seen a few years ago, last year it was not seen, while this year it was present. The fisherman's martin was also present in Lake Ohrid," stressed specialist Adnan Bego.
At the beginning of this year, the waterfowl census was focused on Lake Ohrid, Prespa, Gjanci and, for the first time, Lake Moglica. (A2 Televizion)
