Following media reports that various individuals are sending messages with fake links claiming to update bank details, the police are informing citizens not to fall prey to this fraud scheme that steals their money from banks.
"The Cybercrime Investigation Directorate of the State Police informs the public about a fraudulent scheme that has recently been circulating through SMS messages and electronic communication applications. As yet unidentified citizens are sending messages containing false links, claiming that it is necessary to update bank data or verify citizens' accounts. After citizens click on these links and provide their personal or bank data, the perpetrators of these actions manage to access bank accounts and in many cases, have stolen considerable amounts of money," the Police announced.
In a statement distributed to the media this afternoon, the police emphasize that "no banking or state institution requests the sending of sensitive data, such as bank card numbers, PIN codes or other security credentials, through SMS or suspicious links."
She calls on all citizens not to click on any links and not to provide their personal or banking information.
"Do not click on any links sent from unknown sources;
Not to provide their personal or banking information in suspicious forms online;
Verify any such information directly with the relevant institution (bank or state agency);
Immediately report any suspected case to the cybercrime investigation structures of the State Police.
The State Police continues to pursue these cases with priority and is cooperating closely with financial institutions and partners to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
