The OSCE Presence in Tirana was not consulted by the Albanian authorities during the drafting of the new Criminal Code. In a reaction to the media, the OSCE Office in Tirana emphasizes that this is a fundamental law that deserves sufficient time and a full consultation process, while expressing its readiness to offer its expertise.
“The OSCE presence in Albania emphasizes the importance of the Criminal Code as a fundamental law that deserves sufficient time and a full consultation process. Although we were not involved in the drafting of the proposed amendments, we are reviewing the available draft and stand ready to provide concrete recommendations to the new government and parliament, in line with our mandate to support democratic institutions and the rule of law in Albania.”
Earlier, the European Union presence confirmed that it had not been consulted on the draft, while calling for the widest possible consultation.
Referring specifically to concerns about media freedom, Prime Minister Rama confirmed that before passing to Parliament, the new Criminal Code will also be consulted with Brussels experts. (A2 Televizion)
