Loans for equipment purchases, working capital, or investments in real estate are the reasons that prompted businesses and individuals to approach banks more frequently in 2024. Mostly in lek and less in euro as a result of the fluctuations of this currency, new loans disbursed for the past year reached 379.8 billion lek, 19% more than in 2023.
A warning from the Bank of Albania about a tightening of lending conditions encouraged Albanians to borrow more at the end of the year. In December, 47.8 billion lek was borrowed from 11 commercial banks in the country, marking a record value for 2024.
The impact on the rapid growth of lending was provided by the business category with a 24% increase.
But individuals were not absent from the banks' doors either, receiving 19% more loans last year.
Broken down by region and by resident population, the highest loan value was recorded in the capital. But the largest number of citizens benefited in Durrës in 2024. Followed by Vlora and Fier.
As a result of exchange rate fluctuations, more loans were taken out in lek and less in foreign currency. (A2 Televizion)
