The strong tensions that have been accompanying the trial of the defendants in the “Golden Bullet” case for four sessions in the Special Court culminated in insults between the parties in Thursday’s session. The process remained on hold for several sessions, and the reason was the court’s refusal to make available to the lawyers the full transcripts of several statements by the repentant justice official, Erion Alibej. According to the court, the deleted pages in the transcripts that were given to the lawyers belong to other investigative cases. The decision sparked a reaction from the lawyer of the defendant, Henrik Hoxha, who requested the exclusion of all three members of the trial panel, claiming bias in the trial. The same request was also expressed by lawyers Aldo Shkëmbi and Elda Zotaj.
Attorney Shkëmbi asked the court to, just as it draws the attention of lawyers to maintaining ethics in the hearing, also draw the attention of SPAK prosecutors in cases where they speak without permission or interrupt lawyers.
But as lawyer Gentian Rumano said that the court's decision is historic, to the detriment of the defendants' rights, prosecutor Behar Dibra asked the court to interrupt the lawyer's speech and order his removal. Yes, the lawyer quipped, "Get me out," and continued that this was the procedural moment when he should have articulated the request for exclusion. But the prosecutor continued, "Can you interrupt, because we will not listen to this idiot's idiocy." At this point, the court intervened to calm the situation.
Attorney Rumano, after remembering that a criminal offense had just been committed, left the courtroom. His client's lack of defense forced the court to postpone the hearing, thus registering the fourth time in a row that it was unable to hear the testimony of the associate of justice, Skerdi Tasi.
