Recent developments in the country's municipalities have brought the reaction of Democratic MP Jorida Tabaku, according to whom what is happening with the municipalities and the next show of majority is an unprecedented intervention in local government and a flagrant violation of local autonomy.
Through a video published on social media, Tabaku considers it a legal and institutional violation that government ministers interview municipal employees or interfere in their structures through new recruitments and layoffs. She underlines that local government is an independent power from the central government, elected by the citizens and mandated to exercise certain functions in accordance with the law and the public interest.
"Municipalities cannot be treated as subordinate offices of the Socialist Party or any ministry. Ministers cannot be lined up to interview municipal staff, who are elected by the citizens' vote. This is a serious violation of the principles of separation of powers and deeply endangers democracy," said Tabaku.
The Democratic MP added that the current situation, where the central government is attempting to gather all power in a single hand, is dangerous for the country. According to her, establishing structures, determining salaries and imposing staff exceed any competence that a government should have in relation to local government.
Tabaku stated that respecting the separation of powers and protecting the autonomy of local government are the foundations of functional democracy. (A2 Televizion)
