" It is not Guantanamo as someone said, it is a humanitarian solution. An agreement between countries that share a common position in the Mediterranean. It is not a dangerous solution. As a former member of the European institutions, it seems to me that there are no legal risks. We may disagree politically, but at the legal level everything is done in accordance with the community of rules ", he concluded.
In an interview for Corriere Della Sera, Tajani reveals all the behind-the-scenes of the agreement that provides for the return of the port of Shengjin to a reception center for immigrants and Gjadri to a camp for the stationing of 36 thousand of them in a year.
According to him, the discussions about the agreement, which he describes as a humanitarian solution, have started since April this year and not during Melon's vacation in Vlora.
" I have read stories and articles in Italian newspapers that are really absurd, materially false. It is an agreement of the entire Italian government, for which the Presidency of the Council, Foreign Affairs, Interior, Justice and Health have worked together. The entire negotiation, from the initial stages, was normally managed by my ministry. The first preparatory meeting was held in my office at Palazzo Chigi. After an initial meeting I had with Giorgia Meloni, I called a preliminary operational meeting between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Interior and the embassy in Tirana on April 6. It's not a deal born over a glass of wine on vacation. On May 24, the first operational mission in Tirana was launched by the Foreign and Internal Affairs. We have dozens of minutes, e-mails, reports of meetings between our officials and the Albanian leaders ", explains Tajani.
As for the criticism that the implementation of the agreement would constitute a violation of the rules of reception of immigrants from third countries, Tajani informs that the Italian Ministry of Justice is examining all legal frameworks.
" In our work, we have included the Ministry of Justice to examine every legal aspect. We have reviewed similar cases, we have read international and European sentences and jurisprudence. Anyone who says we are going to Guantanamo is making a statement that is offensive and ridiculous.
