Sali Berisha calls the May 11 elections a farce and talks about international laws and the Copenhagen document for free elections, while the vote counting process is nearing its end and there is no change in the result. In a statement to the media from the blue headquarters, the democratic leader emphasizes that what happened on May 11 is a complete reversal of the most basic principles of free elections.
"International laws, the Copenhagen Document on Free Elections, the Constitution of the country and the electoral code require that an electoral process be conducted in accordance with the provisions of these laws, these principles. Otherwise, it is not an electoral process, but an electoral farce. Therefore, I ask the understanding of the media to remove the word election from their vocabulary and replace it with the word electoral farce. This is because in these elections the most fundamental principles of fair elections were violated, for which Albania has signed the Copenhagen Document. Albania has embodied this document and the principles of this document in the Constitution of the country and in the electoral code. What happened on May 11, and the entire period preceding the May 11 elections, is a complete reversal of the most fundamental principles of free elections, which require voters to freely express their opinion about the representatives they elect", Berisha said.
According to the democratic leader, the control of the will of the voters was omnipresent, multifaceted and widespread throughout the country.
"It has now become known that the control of the will of the voters was all-encompassing, multifaceted and widespread throughout the country. It was all-encompassing, from flattery, from influence to threats and face-to-face shooting. So, in principle, anyone who seeks to face the truth must read international and national documents on elections, if they are to respect their dignity, the true values they believe in or should believe in."
Another principle, according to Berisha, that was violated in these elections is the one that separates the rule of law from the party state, making the competition, according to him, fictitious.
"That Albania had an electoral farce, which free people can never accept. In these elections and in this country, another of the most fundamental principles of a democratic system was violated. The condition principle that separates the legal state from the party state. And this happened in thousands and thousands of cases. What does point 5, fraction 4 say? They pledge to a clear separation of the state and political parties. In particular, political parties will not interfere with the state. This is what the international document defines for fair elections. From the moment you compete with a party state, they are not elections but electoral farces. The electoral process ends because there is no competition. The competition is fictitious because you have on the field in the match a state that has budgets of billions behind it, that has endless logistics, that has all the means of violence and one or several political forces without any means of defense against this barbaric state in relation to the elections."
