Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, in a conference with journalists, stated that it is not possible to protest against the agreement for refugees between Prime Minister Edi Rama and his Italian counterpart, Georgia Meloni.
Berisha stated that he cannot raise the country in a wave of anti-immigrant, xenophobia, while he further added that he is against the agreement because it is contrary to the Constitution and the Convention of human rights.
"In my concept, there is no protest against other countries. A country that has experienced dictatorship is not normal to protest about these. We cannot allow my country to rise in a wave of anti-immigrant, xenophobia, at a time when in our tradition we have or have not been welcoming. I belong to a right-wing political force and I cannot accept that we stand up in protests. I do not agree that the act is absolutely against the constitution and human rights and freedoms. After my statement, the deputy prime minister of Italy called me, and he told me, Sali, we saw the statement and I explained to him that we are against it for these reasons. There can be no protests that incite xenophobia. I believe that Italy has given extraordinary help to Albania. Today, there may be over 30,000 Albanians in Italian schools. Today in Italy there are over 20 thousand Albanian businessmen who invest in Albania. In my concept, there is no protest against other countries. A country that has experienced dictatorship is not normal to protest about these things." , Berisha said, among other things. (A2 Televizion)
