Socialist Party MP Petro Koçi has explained the reasons why he yesterday requested Erion Veliaj's resignation from the position of mayor of Tirana.
Through a post on social media, Koçi says that Tirana cannot be governed by correspondence, even if the elected official were to exercise his duties using this method under conditions of freedom.
Koçi also said that Veliaj's resignation would constitute a manly approach, to the point that, according to him, even the harshest opponents would take their hats off to him, writes A2 CNN.
Petro Koç's post:
Why I suggested Mr. Veliaj's resignation yesterday:
1. Tirana cannot be governed by correspondence even if the elected official were to exercise his/her duties by this method under conditions of freedom. The Mayor has a responsibility and burden that is too great to be able to carry out the mission of governance even at the minimum required by the conditions of limited freedom in isolation.
2. It has already been proven that the position of the elected official does not create any advantage or relief in cases of criminal prosecution. Being a deputy, mayor or even a minister does not create any relief in relation to criminal prosecution, security measures or criminal punishment. On the contrary, the perception has been created that often the position of the elected official is a more aggravating than mitigating circumstance for the defendants. This does not mean that Mr. Berisha's case can be justified. He has clearly been treated as an exception.
3. It seems controversial, but a possible resignation of Erion would be considered more as a respect for the oath he took to serve Tirana and as loyalty to the plebiscite vote of confidence than as a surrender. I believe that this act would be perceived as a clearly different and morally opposite approach to that of Mr. Berisha, who held onto the position of Chairman of the DP to gain immunity from accusations and criminal proceedings.
4. Resignation would be a strong moral card and would strengthen the credibility of the claim of innocence. In the current circumstances, this act would constitute a major service and perhaps even a sacrifice for Tirana, the Socialist Party and the countless tasks that the largest Municipality of our country has undertaken.
5. I think that resigning would be a manly approach and not a behavior from a position of weakness.
I believe that even Mr. Veliaj's fiercest opponents would take their hats off out of respect.
6. The "defense" that Mr. Sali gave Erioni is not in fact a reflection of the leader of the DP on the standards of justice, but simply a tactic to immunize his own backside.
7. This stance of mine is not only personal but also extremely kind and open. So that every Nest Angon and every cowardly spy like the one who has our political views should not rub their hands in joy. (A2 Televizion)
