The statements of a justice collaborator have helped SPAK in the investigation against Mayor Erion Veliaj and his wife, Ajola Xoxa.
This is the first time that SPAK has a "repentant" in an investigation for "corruption" and not for crimes against life by organized crime. The existence of a collaborator of justice is mentioned by SPAK in the indictment against the defendants, writes A2.
Until this stage of the investigation, the identity of the person who has "unraveled" himself before investigators, providing sufficient explanations to offer them a cooperation agreement, has been kept secret.
Unofficial sources at SPAK indicate that the defendant is a close associate of Ajola Xoxe, the wife of Mayor Veliaj with an important role in one of the non-profit organizations, among which Xoxe is suspected of having created a criminal scheme to embezzle public funds from the Municipality of Tirana. The statements of the justice collaborator are listed by SPAK in the indictment signed by the defendants in the case, as one of the investigative acts among which the charges brought against the suspects are proven.
The justice collaborator is one of the defendants in the case and at the end of the process benefits from a reduction in the sentence, up to exemption from punishment, depending on the assistance provided for the investigation. In the “Veliaj” file, SPAK has collected more than 90 pieces of evidence, accounting expertise, written documents from the Customs and Tax Directorates, second-tier banks, thousands of pages of documentation from the Municipality and other public institutions, as well as inspections in the TIMS, tax and National Business Center systems.
On Wednesday, Erion Veliaj was indicted for "corruption", "money laundering", "hiding assets" and "bringing prohibited items into prison", while Ajola Xoxa was indicted for "corruption", "money laundering", "failure to declare assets" and "hiding income".
Nearly 30 individuals and legal entities have been charged in the same case. (A2 Televizion)
